Recently I made a trip to The Dollar Tree and I purchased a ton of awesome things to put together for our days in. My kids sometimes just need a way to calm down or stay busy during rainy days or days where I just need a break.
Things I found at the dollar tree:
- Pipe cleaners
- Bread Pans
- Rubber Bands
- Playdoh Tools
- Foam Letters
- Foam Puzzle
- Plastic Eggs
- Crayola Crayons (not pictured)
- Large Art Pad (not pictured)
This is just a list of things I purchased this time around! Some of you may not believe it, but The Dollar Tree is full of hidden treasures! I could spend hours in that store finding different things to entertain my kids with!
Do you know what the best thing about the Dollar Tree is?
EVERYTHING IS ONE DOLLAR!
Yes, if you didn’t already know, everything at the Dollar Tree is always $1! So not only are you finding things to help your kids grow and learn, but you are also doing it cheap!
Here are 7 fun sensory activities that you can do with your toddler with items found at The Dollar Tree!
Rice & Beans Bin
Our rice bin is probably my twin’s favorite sensory activity! The have fun scooping out rice & beans (making a mess is fun!) and they love finding all the treasures that I’ve put inside!
In our bin right now we have:
- Foam Letters
I’ll throw in some big kitchen spoons and measuring cups and let them go to town! They can be at this for hours, which is nice for me to he able to get stuff done. I do recommend staying close by though. My toddlers still put EVERYTHING in the mouths, and I don’t want them to choke on anything!
Another activity that my twins enjoy is Pompom Whisks!
It’s a very simple activity, and you only need TWO things to put it together: POMPOMS & A WHISK!
I start off by shoving as many pompoms that I can into the whisk, I then hand it to my toddlers and let them go crazy!
My daughter loves putting a of the pompoms back in, while my son loves pulling them out! Team work makes the dream work!
Here are a few other fun sensory ideas:
Stickers & Paper
Let your toddler explore the world of sticking things to things that are not your walls or windows! I put down a large pad of paper, monitor the sticker usage, and let them place the stickers anywhere their heart desires! As they get older you can draw lines or even the alphabet and have them place stickers on the lines. You can teach them about patterns, colors, and letters all in one simple way.
Bread Pan Guitar
Take rubber bands, and a bread pan: now just put the rubber bands over the bread pan and BAM! You’ve got yourself a musical instrument! Let your child explore the different sounds it makes! They can drum, strum, pull, and snap. My twins love playing their “guitars”!
Take your colander that you use for straining noodles and thread pipe cleaners through it! Now let your little one take them out, and put them back through! This is another activity that works with your growing toddler. As they develop the skill of pulling out the pipe cleaners they will soon learn how to thread them back through themselves!
Give your toddlers a safe space to go wild on a piece of paper! My twins love it when I break out the art pad and crayons.
I could literally go on and on and on about sensory bottles! They are so fun for the kids, and so EASY to make for the adults! First: Get a bottle! You can use any clear bottle, I’ve made them from 2 liter soda bottles, and those ICE drink bottles. Then fill them with fun noise makers, colors, glitter, beads, LITERALLY ANYTHING! We have a few bottles now, and most of them have fun colored rice (you can dye the rice yourself using food coloring), beads, and even those fun glass like rocks you get for fish tanks! These sensory bottles are always a big hit at playgroups and play dates. The younger kids enjoy making the loud maraca like noises by shaking them, while the older kids love playing I SPY for different colors, letters, and shapes.
AGAIN, you can find all of this stuff at The Dollar Tree! Making sensory things for your toddler doesn’t have to be hard or expensive. Sometimes it’s the simple and cheap things that can keep them busy for HOURS!
